As the heat of summer recedes and autumn beckons, we all look forward to two of the big events in the local calendar, both returning after pandemic breaks. The Colyton Carnival procession on 10 September will be the culmination of a week of fun and fund raising. Colyton Goose Fair is taking place for the 41st time. Very well done to the dedicated organisers of both events! Please support them.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Carnival events are great for the town and raise funds both to sustain its own future as well as for other local organisations. It could not take place without the commitment and support of the volunteers and helpers that make it happen. Unfortunately, due to the knock-on effects of the COVID pandemic and other factors, a lot of those volunteers who have previously helped with the arrangements and at the events themselves are no longer able to participate. The Carnival committee is, therefore, calling on members of the community to come forward to fill the gaps and help make a great success of the comeback year.

Details of all the events can be found in the Carnival programme which is available in local shops for 50p - including a free draw entry.

BACK TO MEDIEVAL TIMES

It has been three years since Colyford Goose Fayre was last held, when it celebrated its fortieth year. The organisers are looking forward to reviving the medieval themed fayre on the last Saturday in September. Many of the usual stallholders are returning along with some new additions for 2022.

Admission is by programme - £5 (free entry to accompanied children under 14). The procession that launches the event starts from The Elms at 1.30pm. Gates are open from 1.45pm.

The Goose Fayre is held on Springfield, Seaton Road. The committee is very grateful for the generosity of Mr and Mrs Pountney and Mr and Mrs Organ for allowing them to use their fields for the fayre and car parking.

MUCH TO ENJOY

The Fayre will include demonstrations of traditional country crafts, cider pressing and falconry, with plenty of entertainment and games for children including Punch & Judy shows and riding the quintain. A wide variety of refreshments will be available, including the traditional ram roast.

THEY TOO NEED VOLUNTEERS

As always, the organisers are hugely grateful for the support received from the community and gladly welcome any additional helpers. Volunteers for setting up the field, the stalls and helping to shift bales of straw during the preceding week are much appreciated, as are donations for the refreshment tent, cakes and the'gooseyola' stall. For volunteering to help with the field team or any other aspect of he Goose Fayre please contact vaughanjelley@gmail.com or call Vaughan on 07932 721777.

GET INTO THE SPIRIT

The Colyford Memorial Hall will be open on Saturday 17th September from 4.30 to 6.30pm for borrowing costumes. There is a large selection of medieval costumes available for men, women and children. This is also an opportunity for anyone to drop off any items they may wish to donate to the tombola.

All the wonderful bakers who provide cakes or traybakes for the refreshment tent can deliver them to the Goose Fayre field on the morning of the Fayre. If you can bake a cake for the Fayre, it would be really helpful to let Ann know. Please contact annjelley43@gmail.com or call 07876 115311 about cakes or for further information on borrowing costumes.
